The NoveltyStill making history

The Novelty, located behind the Monhegan House, has contributed to island life in a variety of ways since its incarnation in 1908 (or thereabout).  If the walls could talk, they would most certainly tell some very interesting stories about the dance hall romances and late night artist circles they have witnessed.  The building has even served a short stint as a health club in the 80’s!

In sharp contrast to the 80’s, the Novelty now serves as Monhegan Island’s premier destination for a casual lunch or dinner.  The Novelty serves a wide variety of hot and cold sandwiches and wraps, fresh and delicious salads, and Monhegan’s ONLY pizza!  The Novelty also carries a wide and carefully selected stock of wineWhat a fantastic food and refreshment selection. So well priced and delicious. guaranteed to satisfy every palate and budget.  For the beer aficionado, The Novelty offers a number of brews not widely available even in the Portland area, from such highly-regarded Maine and New England breweries as Maine Beer Company, Bunker Brewing Company, Foundation Brewing Company, Mason’s Brewing Company, Bantam Cider and more.

For the perfect end to your hike (or for no reason at all!), we scoop many flavors of Sanford’s own Shain’s of Maine ice cream.  If ice cream is not your thing, or, conversely, cake and ice cream IS your thing, why not try a whoopie pie from Wicked Whoopies?  Available in a variety of flavors.

In addition to all of the above (what – there’s more?!?), the Novelty provides a number of options for your late afternoon cocktail snacks including an interesting selection of cheeses, salami, spreads and other nibbles from local purveyors such as Pineland Farms, Stonewall Kitchen and New England Charcuterie.  We also carry a wide variety of crackers and snacks to accompany your choices.

They make it hard to decide - so many wonderful food and refreshment choicesThe Novelty offers something for everyone, including those with dietary concerns.  Gluten-free pizza crust is available, as is gluten-free sandwich bread from Udi’s.

The Novelty is unable to accept credit cards.  However, for your convenience an ATM (with the lowest service charge on Monhegan) is located inside the store.  Personal checks are also accepted.
