CANCELLATION POLICY
As a small, seasonal business operating in a remote location, cancellations have a significant impact on our viability. As such, the Monhegan House has the following strict cancellation policy:
If you cancel with more than 30 days of your stay, you'll get a full refund, no questions asked.
Cancel between 8-30 days? Forfeit your deposit but receive a credit for a future stay.
Cancel under 7 days? Sorry but no refund.
Requests to remove one or more days from your confirmed reservation are subject to the cancellation policies outlined above.
Travel insurance recommended for large reservations.
NOTE: Trap Day (Sept 30-Oct 2) reservations have separate Holiday Policy:
Cancel before August 1? Forfeit your deposit but receive credit for future stay.
Cancel after August 1? Sorry, no refund.
GROUP bookings and room blocks are subject to separate cancellation policies .....
ADDITIONAL CHARGES
Well behaved children are welcome at our inn. Children under 3 are free. Children aged 3-12 are an additional $25/night fee (beyond 2 guests occupancy per double room or 1 guest occupancy per single room).
Additional adults (13 and older), beyond set room occupancy, are an additional $40/night.
Portacribs and cots/mats are available as needed, no charge.
CHECK-IN / CHECK-OUT
Check-in is officially at 3pm. But we know you've had a long ferry ride and we will do our best to get you settled earlier when possible.
At the dock:
When you land on the dock, look for Alex at the Monhegan House truck. He will bring your bags to the inn for you, free of charge, so that you may walk hands-free.
Please tag your bags with your name and "MOHO" - that'll help them move safely through this journey from your car to our lobby.
NOTE: MOHO is not responsible for bags left on the dock, so please make sure Mark has your bag before you walk up the hill.
To find the inn:
Walk up the hill past the Island Inn and to the T.
Turn right and stroll along the meadow, passing the small Monhegan Store on your left and the First Aid Station on your right.
Continue to the main square. The church will be directly in front of you.
Look left, and there we are!
Come on in:
Please come into the lobby to say hi.
We'll organize your luggage and, if your room's not ready yet, we'll hold your bags free of charge so you can go play until your room's ready.
If arriving after 5:00 pm, please notify the front desk to make special arrangements for after hours check-in.
Check-out is 10am. Usually this is no problem - you've got trails to hike, photos to take, souvenirs to purchase.
Just bring your bags down to the lobby where we will hold them and then deliver them, free of charge, to the dock in time for your scheduled ferry.
This is a tricky business. Ever watch the dabbawallas in Mumbai? We're not as expert as them! So please help us: Bring HAND your clearly-labeled luggage directly to the lobby host who will tag it appropriately.
NOTE: The Monhegan House is not responsible for any unidentified luggage left anywhere in the lobby.
Then please stay, make yourself at home, enjoy all the hotel amenities (restrooms, lobby, porch and grounds) until you have to say goodbye.
LUGGAGE
Our historic inn is a multi story building with some narrow corridors and no elevator. So please, pack light. And limit the weight of each piece of luggage or freight to no more than 40 pounds.
KEYS
Room keys must be returned to the front desk at the time of checkout. If a key is lost or not returned, your credit card will be charged $50 to cover the cost of replacement.
QUIET TIME
Did you know that 8pm is fondly called "Monhegan Midnight"? No joke.
The Monhegan House graciously asks that guests observe quiet time in all areas of the hotel, inside and out, from 10pm until 7am so that all our visitors as well as fellow islanders (many of whom will be serving you the next day at the Brewery) may enjoy a relaxed and restful night's sleep.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Most folks come to Monhegan to listen to the gulls, soak in the quiet.
So please, no phone calls in the public areas of the hotel.
Please silence your devices (a good thing to do on the ferry before you even arrive)
And use headphones, even if your room (the ole girl was built in 1872 and has thin walls) so as not to disturb other guests.
PETS
Our house dog Sammie loves furfriends! So we are delighted to announce that our 3 first-floor suites can now welcome well-behaved dogs.
We ask that dogs stay on the lawn to keep our busy porch and lobby for human guests.
And that dogs enter and exit the hotel via their suites' private exterior entrance/exits, keeping the lobby fur-free.
Please pick up meticulously after your doggo. We've provided Sani-stations to make this easy. Let's all be conscientious about these policies so that MOHO can continue to be a pet-friendly inn.
Forgot Fido's food? You'll find homemade dog meals in the Novelty.
There is one dog permitted per room, and a one-time flat Fido fee of $100 which covers your Bark Bag of goodies, a loaner doggie bed, and after-visit deep clean.
SAFETY
SMOKING
The Monhegan House is a completely SMOKE-FREE property. This is serious!
We are a 150-year-old all-wood structure on a remote island with only volunteers fighting fires out of a WELL!
So please take this seroiusly!
There is no smoking of any thing any where - not inside any building, nor on the fire escape nor anywhere on the Monhegan House grounds.
That means no cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes (vaping devices), or cannabis (we don't care what you're smoking, just can't have any embers)
If you must smoke, the safest place is on the beach, surrounded by sand and water, then please bring your FULLY extinguished and cooled down butt to the hotel staff for safe disposal.
This is a deadly serious topic! Smokers will be subject to immediate eviction and will be charged a minimum $1000.00 fine.
CHEMICALS / HAZARDOUS WASTE
Artists, this one's for you -- Monhegan does not have a facility that accepts toxic waste. Guests must take any leftover products such as paint thinner, brush cleaner, etc. with them when they depart the island.
RAGS TOO! Please do NOT dispose of rags used for brush cleaning in any trash can. This is serious FIRE HAZARD.
Please help us protect our historic hotel.
YOUR LIFE AT THE HOTEL
DINING
You have chosen a food-focused home on Monhegan!
You'll find coffee - roasted at a small batch shop in Rockland called Rock City - and other cozy morning beverages in the lobby every morning starting at 6:30am.
Our 3-course 5* breakfast is served in the dining room from 8-9:30 every day, and is included in your stay.
Bowdens Family Farm sends our eggs out on the ferry, fresh from their farm on the peninsula, and there's always an egg-y course (French eggs, avocado stacks, Moroccan shakshuka, or the MOHO favorite - Wednesday Eggs Benedict!) served with some of our favorite side dishes like mushroom galette, grilled peaches, or our Mug breakfast potatoes. We make our own granola, chock full of coconut flakes, pecans, and whole almonds, and sometimes set up a smoothie bar. Finishing touches might be blueberry silver dollar pancakes or pecan waffles.
Dinner will also be available for separate purchase at the hotel - and we've got some special plans in the works so stay tuned!
Or you can dine around the island if you prefer, enjoying shrimp tacos at the Fish House or an early dinner from the Bait Bag at the Brewery.
The Novelty serves up pizza, ice cream (with sprinkles and waffle cones this year!), drinks, wine, beer and more.
Hotel guests may charge all Novelty and dining room purchases directly to their room.
We offer coconut and oat milk alternatives and gluten free items in our dining room and the Novelty. Please let your server know of any allergies or dietary restrictions when you arrive.
BEVERAGES
A nightly mocktail designed by our resident Mixologist will be served in the lobby at Happy Hour every evening. Did you know that Monhegan is a Plantation and therefore does not sell any hard liquor? You are welcome, however, to bring your own to the island, to spruce up this evening mocktail.
Guests are welcome to bring alcoholic beverages into our dining room as the Monhegan House does not have a serving license. An excellent selection of beer and wine is available for purchase in the hotel lobby as well as in the Novelty.
BATHROOMS
The majority of our guest rooms do not have private bath facilities within the room.
These rooms utilize detached, centrally located bathroom facilities on the first and second floors. There are multiple individual private shower rooms (and one tub shower) and multiple individual private half-baths (sink and toilet) on the first floor as well as two individual private half-baths on the second floor. Guests staying on the top floor must walk down one flight to access a half-bath and two flights to utilize a shower room.
ATM
Need cash?
There is an ATM available in the Novelty.
